Frequently Asked Questions

What can CNC punching do that laser cutting can’t?
As well as holes and cut-outs, our LVD Shape Delta 1000 turret punch forms features directly into the sheet — louvres, dimples, countersinks, embosses, extrusions and knock-outs — in a single operation, which laser cutting can’t do.
What thickness can you punch?
Up to around 5mm depending on material and tool, on large-format sheets. The 20-tonne press and 20-station bi-directional turret let us mix punching and forming tools in one program.
How are parts programmed and nested?
Everything is programmed and nested in Radan (Hexagon) CAD/CAM, which packs parts tightly onto the sheet to keep material waste — and therefore cost — down.
What tooling shapes do you hold?
Round, square, rectangular, obround and a range of forming tools as standard, plus specials where a job needs them. See our Punch Tooling reference for the common shapes.
Is punching cheaper than laser for my job?
For thinner sheet, high hole counts, perforated panels and repeat production it’s often faster and more cost-effective than laser. For thick plate or intricate profiles, laser usually wins. Send us the part and we’ll pick the right process.
Can you punch and fold the same part?
Yes — punching and forming is usually followed by folding on our press brakes, all in-house, so panels, enclosures and brackets come back to you finished.
Do you punch one-offs or only volume?
Both, though punching really comes into its own on repeat and batch work, where the programmed accuracy gives you identical parts every time.
Which materials can you punch?
Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and pre-galvanised (Zintec) sheet are all punched regularly.
